World Golf Championships
World Golf Championships (WGC)
Les tournois WGC sont les plus importants et les mieux dotés après ceux du Grand Chelem.
Créé en 1996 par les cinq grands organisateurs de tournois (Tour Européen, Japan Tour, PGA Tour, Tour d’Australasie et le Tour d’Afrique du Sunshine Tour) avec l’intention d’organiser des nouvelles grandes compétitions entre les meilleurs golfeurs du monde, le World Golf Championship tour comprend un ensemble de quatre tournois majeurs sous un format différent dont trois sont nés en 1999. Le HSBC Champions, la dernière étape qui se joue au mois de novembre, fait partie du World Golf Championships depuis 2009. Ces quatre tournois se classent juste en dessous des Majeurs qui forment le Grand Chelem. Le champ est réduit, comportant 74 joueurs, et la compétition se joue sans cut. Le vainqueur de l'un des quatre tournois, a le droit de joueur sur le Tour américain pendant trois ans.
Les quatre tournois depuis 2017: le WGC Mexico Championship, le Championnat du monde de match-play (Dell Match-Play), l'Invitational (St. Jude depuis 2019; Bridgestone et NEC avant) et le WGC-HSBC Champions.
A noter que la Coupe monde a fait partie du WGC de 2000 à 2008.
Les vainqueurs de chacun des quatre tournois reçoivent un trophée en Wedgwood au nom d'un grand champion de golf : The Old Tom Morris Cup pour le vainqueur du HSBC Champions, The Walter Hagen Cup pour le Dell Match Play Championship; the Gene Sarazen Cup pour the Mexico Championship ; the Gary Player Cup pour le Bridgestone Invitational.
- Mexico Championship (en stroke play) sur le parcours du Chapultepec au Mexico City. Anciennement WGC American Express Championship, CA Championship et Cadillac Championship.
Le premier tournoi WGC avait lieu jusqu'en 2016 à Doral (Floride) sur un parcours appartenant à Donald Trump, le nouveau président de Etats-Unis. Mais les polémiques nées des déclarations de Trump lors de la campagne présidentielle et la perte d'un partenaire-titre, ont conduit à la relocalisation de ce tournoi au Mexique.
- Dell Match Play Championship sur le parcours de Austin en Texas.
- St. Jude Invitational (avant Bridgestone Invitational et NEC) au TPC Southwind (en stroke play).
- HSBC Champions (en stroke play) sur la parcours du Sheshan International Golf Club de Shanghai.
La WGC World Cup (une épreuve disputée par équipe de deux golfeurs venant de 24 pays différents) a fait partie du World Golf Championship de 2000 à 2008.
Les quatre tournois World Golf Championships sont également les plus richement dotés en golf avec 10 000 000 $ par étape dont 1 530 000 $ pour le vainqueur (plus 550 FedEx points).
Les multiples vainqueurs
- Tiger Woods a longtemps été le seul à avoir remporté les quatre épreuves du WGC pour un total de 19 victoires dont 8 Bridgestones, 7 Cadillac, 3 Accentures, 1 Coupe du Monde. Fin mars 2017, Dustin Johnson a également réussi le grand chelem en remportant les quatre tournois du WGC après son succès au Dell Match Play Championship.
- Le plus jeune vainqueur de l'un des quatre tournois est l'Américain Patrick Reed , vainqueur à 23 ans et 7 mois, en remportant le Cadillac Championship en mars 2014.
- Rory McIlroy est le seul Européen avec trois victoires (Bridgestone, Cadillac, HSBC)

HSBC Champions
Organisé pour la première fois en 2005, ce tournoi a rejoint le World Golf Championship en 2009. C'est la dernière des quatre étapes qui se déroule début novembre sur le parcours du Sheshan (Shenzhen) International Golf Club de Shanghai en Chine. En 2012, c'était l'un des douze parcours appartenant au complexe golfique de Mission Hills à Guangdong qui l'a organisé. Il est retourné à Shanghai en 2013.
