Ils ont été organisés pour la première fois en 1920 à Anvers en Belgique à l'occasion des Jeux Olympiques. Depuis 1930, ils se déroulent tous les ans au mois d'avril ou de mai.
Entre 1920 et 1968, le titre olympique délivrait également le titre mondial.
