Porte-drapeau pour son pays lors de la cérémonie d'ouverture, Cheung Ka Long remporte la première médaille d'or olympique pour Hong Kong depuis l'indépendance en 1997. Il a battu le champion olympique en titre, l'Italien Daniele Garozzo. Il offre à son pays la première médaille d'or en escrime, et la deuxième tous sports confondus après la véliplanchiste Shan-Lee Laï à Atlanta en 1996.
