On attendait un nouveau duel entre kényans et ethiopiens mais dans les rues bondées de Londres, l'ougandais Stephen Kiprotich a remporté à 23 ans le marathon, dernière épreuve d'athlétisme de la quinzaine olympique, en bouclant les 42,195 km en 2h8mn01s. Il est le deuxième champion olympique ougandais après John Akii-Bua, sacré sur les 400 m haies en 1972.
